São Paulo Fashion Week & Mario Queiroz

While the popular fashion events like Milan Menswear Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin, and Bread & Butter steal the thunder, less publicized fashion weeks rumble onward with trendsetting collections!

At São Paulo Fashion Week, designer Mario Queiroz presented his 2012 autumn/winter collection, which was inspired by Art Deco and Futurism.

The forms were classic but flowing with wool, jacquard, and crystals.

What impressed me the most about this collection was the sustainable approach, in that materials were reused from previous collection.

Fause Haten at São Paulo Fashion Week

Recently at São Paulo Fashion Week, Fause Haten presented his 2012 autumn/winter collection, which drew inspiration from Elvis Presley movies and the Sixties.

Emphasis was placed on the use of tropical prints in silks and sequins.

Born of Lebanese immigrants, Fause Haten launched his label in 1987 and was nominated best designer of Brazil in 2001.

São Paulo Fashion Week, Cavalera & the Urban Far West

Creative designer at Cavalera, Alberto Hiar, was inspired by the urban far west, with jeans treated in resin, leather, corduroy, washed velvet, sweat shirts, embroideries, laser cuts, mesh and lace!

The location of the catwalk was Estação da Luz, which that reflects the diversity of the city.

Ethnic prints added the final touch to the collection.

Cavalera was founded in 1995 by Alberto Hiar and Igor Cavalera and has since been a strong street wear brand in Brazil.

Milan Menswear Fashion Week 2012 in Review

As you know the focus of this e-magazine is onemerging designers and trends around the world; nevertheless, we should neverlose sight of the prominent players—that which we call in Italy “Griffe.” (Good Grief,What’s a Griffe?)

A Passion, a Dream & a Friend

Yesterday I posted an article about Uomo Moda, the menswear magazine in Egypt for which I am managing editor.

In the article, I also spoke about my collaborator, Heba, who today sent me the following article:

Being originally an engineer enriched my ability of understanding the lines, and between the lines. Engineering gave me this sense of feeling the beauty, analyzing it to know why I see it beautiful!!

“Respect the line” is one of the important phrases an engineering student hears. Unintentionally, I find myself looking for the lines, patterns, symmetry, harmony and contrast.

Getting into the point, when I had to give up working as an engineer, which is the love of my life, I had to search for another field, may be less tiring and more interesting, as my life has overdosed effort and boredom after all. Coincidence put me along with a family member and an old friend who asked me for help in his business in men’s fashion. I found it weird, and asked this naive question “Isn’t it all about pants and shirts??Huh!”

Now and after few years of asking this shallow question, and when I ‘m asked the same question , I answer with full mouth “yes, it is all about pants and shirt , but can you give me 10 different designs??” you will find that in best cases people can give you 4 to 6 designs for pants and a shirt look . That’s why I now believe that designing fashion for men is way harder than designing fashion for women, and its hardness results from its simplicity. For women’s fashion you have tens of items to change so you have a wider base to start with. On the other hand, for men’s fashion you have limited elements to start with. So, we decided to establish and publish “Uomo Moda” to be the first and only fashion magazine for men in Egypt, not only that but also in the Middle East.

A lot of brain storming, sharing ideas, contacting people, working on content and layout, hundreds of reviews , designs, labels and photos. Here, I have to admit, that men’s fashion catwalks impress me more, not because the smart athletes going on the catwalk, but because of the combination of beauty and masculinity. I invented a theory that says: when you can create harmony out of the contrast, just then you have a perfect case. May be I didn’t make the fortune I’ve dreamt of, but I met priceless people, Francesco Di Maio is one of them.

Last but not least, I have to thank Francesco for giving me this opportunity of communicating with more priceless people, and moreover for his voluntary yet professional support in “Uomo Moda” , the baby I never gave birth to.

Farfetch.com is a network of independent boutiques that unites more than 1,000 fashion labels from around the world.

So, if you want to shop the world’s boutiques in one click, let Farfetch do the fetching and bring those brands from afar!

Uomo Moda & Arab Spring

Already a year has passed since the last issue of Uomo Moda!

Because of the democracy movement in Egypt, we at Uomo Moda were forced to cease publications and wait for the country to regain some normalcy before continuing operations.

I must say that I am very proud of my coworker, Heba, who played an integral role in the Egyptian Arab Spring.

Heba is now contemplating the launch of an e-magazine for Uomo Moda in anticipation of the magazine being published again.

I will continue to keep you posted on events. If you have and questions or comments, please feel free to write.

The key to a great wardrobe is layer-ability. Fall/ Winter is the perfect season to experiment and find pieces that fit together to reflect your own personal style, “says Scott Kuhlman, Founder and Designer of Scott James.

“The Fall/Winter 2012 collection of Scott James focuses on the evolution of its Ameripean aesthetic.
