The Return of The Cap

Last year saw the return of the cap, and it came in many guises, from snapback to trucker to Fivepanel caps, and in a variety of colours, textures and shapes. The last time the cap was so trendy was the eighties, and this vintage aspect is part of its appeal.

The First Time Around
With no particular point of origin, the cap functions as a way to keep light out of eyes and it is said to have been around since the 1900s. The snapback became popular with the rise of baseball in the US in the 1940s and 50s. The cap evolved into a flat peak rather than a curved one, and teams began putting their colours on them so spectators could support them too.

The cap remains a part of the baseball uniform, and today all major league teams’ caps are made by New Era. Many people (including celebrities) still show their support this way. During the 1980s and early 1990s, hip hop culture made the cap fashionable. People like Tupac Shakur, Dr Dre and Ice Cube featured the cap on album covers, music videos and movies helped to promote it and gain popularity.

Today
Today caps are still youthful, casual, and considered urban streetwear. However, last year they featured on the catwalk. A/W for 2012/13 saw the cap on every model on Van Assche’s Dior Homme catwalk, along with Alexander Wang, Lanvin and Acne also featuring the cap in their collections.

High street brands such as Topman and Asos have reported a surge in cap sales, among the most popular is the five-panel style. This style is a squarer style and features two back panels, two side panels, and one on top. The design of these caps has expanded since its days as a purely sporting garment, and now can be spotted in denim, leather and even cork. They can be worn with a growing variety of outfits, from dressing down a suit to putting the finishing touches on your streetwear inspired outfit.

They have been around for a long time and worn by many, but mostly as a practical garment. Now they are taking a step into the limelight and are no longer for truckers and baseball players, instead they are for the men who want to add a playful, youthful and casual facet to their style.

G-Star Raw Jeans

G-Star Jeans for Men

Jeans from G-Star Raw (G-Star) have been a particularly desirable item for men who prefer to wear jeans and want to work a more natural look. With an emphasis upon untreated, unwashed or raw denim, G-star has made a name for itself as a high end producer of fashionable, comfortable denim which is also relatively affordable. Their motto, ‘Just the Product’, relates to an alternative ethos of clothing design which is based around offering the best fabrics and styles the company is able to find.

G-Star is a Dutch designer company who take particular inspiration from military clothing and vintage military apparel. Vintage has been causing quite a stir for the past year and looks set to continue trending into 2013, which means that G-Star jeans are looking set to be an important element of style for gentlemen who want to create their own blend of vintage and modern styles.

Get Recognised with G-Star
G-Star’s men’s jeans have a reputation for setting the individual apart from the crowd. With impressive detailing in the zippers, pockets and seams, as well as high quality dyes which fade with every hand wash in a manner which is unique to the G-Star brand, G-Star jeans should remain on trend and looking fine for longer. To illustrate this, import/export records for China over the past 2 years demonstrate the tens of thousands of kilos of g-star imported and exported in China alone. With a huge 50,000 textile factories in China, it’s easy to see why. An estimated 6000 selling points worldwide are owned by G-Star, to distribute the products.
With a reputation for blending high quality fabric with style, G-Star’s celebrity led following is a quality testament to the brand’s phenomenal success. G-Star celebrity models have included Liv Tyler, Josh Belmonte and Magnus Carlsen, who have all showcased G-Star’s seriously cool style to phenomenal effect. Over two decades the label has grown beyond its humble roots to become an internationally recognised, multinational company with flagship stores in Tokyo, Amsterdam, London and  New York, and  more than  60 other countries having stores stocking the brand-predominantly in more developed countries, although shops have been established as far afield as Kenya and Colombia.

In terms of their popularity and trends amongst the more prolific members of the style and fashion-oreintated, G-Star jeans have been spotted on celebrities such as Clémence Poésy, Mena Suvari and Tom Delonge have all been spotted wearing G-Star jeans at various celebrity parties, as well as out and about. With celebrities who are well-regarded for their sense of dress endorsing the products in such a way,  it’s perhaps hardly surprising that G-Star are a particularly notable brand.

New Lines from G Star
The latest lines from edgy denim fashion label G-Star feature low tapered, slimfit and straight legged jeans, as well as their signature distressed denim and luxury detailing. Colours are darker for winter and the New Year, and G-Star jeans showcase this in deep greys, warm blues and rich indigo.

New G-Star jeans are available to buy online and in one of the numerous boutique stores.  You can shop online at Foot Asylum to find G-Star denim jeans and G-Star T-Shirts, as well as cargo pants, vets and chino trousers and shorts.

What's Hot & What's Not in Shoes

ThThe colours for the coming season have already been picked out. Expect to see a lot of blues, prints, checks, yellows, whites and vibrant reds; a natural progression from the deep plums, greens and tweeds of autumn and winter.

Men’s fashion trends are also taking shape in terms of what to wear and what not to wear, with nautical and vintage themes taking centre stage. Fabrics remain heavy for outerwear – tweed is still big, as is wool – but as the temperatures warm we’re starting to see an abundance of colourful t-shirts, shorts of varying lengths and lighter jackets on the catwalks.

What’s Hot and What’s Not
To help you stay on trend for the coming months, make sure you have these SS2013 essentials in your wardrobe:

Stripes – tops, shirts and jumpers in subtle accents or bold statements.
Primary Colours – blocks or accents, you can’t go wrong with primary colours as long as they’re bright and fun!
Coloured Jeans and Chinos – the latest must-have men’s fashion trouser trends.
On Trend Shoes – bright colours, casual pseudo-sportswear, retro brogues and the return of the espadrille. Shoes are all about finishing an outfit, so use your shoes to dress an outfit up or down.

The Perfect Pair of Shoes
Men’s fashion for SS13 is all about bright colours, relaxed fits, subtle structuring and beach-meets-office, so it’s important to find footwear which encompasses all of these themes. Many men are turning to classic sports shoes to fulfill their need for a comprehensive, on trend shoe; sports shoes are bang on trend and a vintage design will give your choice of footwear that extra edge.

There are many classic design sports shoes around but none more so than Vans, available to buy online from select stockists. For the past forty years Vans have been popular with students, professional skateboarders and celebrities alike, and have been spotted on no less than Ryan Reynolds, Dave Grohl, Jim Parsons and Owen Wilson. Unfathomably stylish, Vans shoes perfectly encapsulate the ultimate trend for men’s fashion in SS13 – classic with a twist.

Trends in Facial Hair

The other day I published an article from OntFront on what to wear in 2013.

What struck me the most was not so much the clothing but rather the facial hair styles.

Throughout 2012, we witnessed a revival of facial hair. I am not referring to the 5 o’clock shadow, mustache, or goatee. When I say facial hair, I mean that heavy beard that takes weeks to grow.

Mostly characteristic of street fashion, these beards are often appears unkept and even straggly.

While this style is not new whatsoever, it is becoming more and more fashionable on the streets.

So what are your opinions? I’m interested in hearing from you.
